Bird’s Eye Cove Farm Wedding
Birds Eye Cove Farm Wedding
Sometimes a wedding venue feels like it was made for storytelling, and Birds Eye Cove Farm is exactly that kind of place. Nestled in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, it offers everything you’d ever want in a setting: rolling mountains, wide-open fields, a barn, cows and chickens wandering the property, and the ocean just a short walk away. It’s rustic, cinematic, and endlessly photogenic. I definitely felt spoilt for choice in the best way when documenting this wedding.

For Deirdre and Eric, this wasn’t just a venue.
It was home.
Eric grew up here, which made their celebration feel even more personal. Rather than following the usual format, they reimagined the space completely, from a brand-new ceremony spot that had never been used before to dinner under the open sky in the field.
Why Birds Eye Cove Farm is a Unique Wedding Venue
Birds Eye Cove Farm has an atmosphere you can’t replicate anywhere else on Vancouver Island. It’s equal parts working farm and breathtaking wedding venue, with views that stretch to the mountains and fields that make for perfect sunset photos.
The barn is both rustic while being elegant. It honestly makes for the perfect backdrop for cocktail hour or late-night dancing. Outside, there an abundance of wide-open spaces for portraits with many trees making you feel like you're deep in a forest and animals that may even wander their way into the photographs.
From a wedding photography perspective, it’s a dream.
Golden hour hits the fields perfectly, the barn gives you moody, textural light, and the landscapes create a cinematic frame for portraits. It’s the kind of venue that makes documentary wedding photography come alive.
The Couple’s Story
Deirdre and Eric’s love story began when they were just teenagers, 16 and 17. Over nearly 15 years together, they weathered long-distance, countless adventures, and everything in between. To finally celebrate their wedding on the land where Eric grew up felt like the most natural, meaningful choice.
Deirdre’s vision was clear from the start: nothing ordinary, nothing expected. She wanted a day that felt authentic, textured, and different from the norm .. a day that showed exactly who they were together.

The Wedding Day At Birds Eye Cove
The day began with both of them getting ready on the property — Deirdre in the suite above the barn, Eric in the family cabin. Their first look was simple but stunning: against the trees of the forest, they turned to see each other at the same moment, one of my favourite ways to document this part of the wedding day.
The ceremony took place in a brand-new spot on the farm, never used before. Floral petals lined the ground, and as they exited hand-in-hand, guests climbed aboard a hay wagon driven by Farmer Paul, Eric’s stepdad, while the newlyweds rode ahead in a convertible with a Just Married sign trailing behind placed there by Deirdre's father.
Cocktail hour took place outside the barn, with the hills in the distance. Dinner was set in the open field, a location typically reserved for ceremonies. Long tables with textured, forest-inspired floral scapes, and as the sun set, speeches and toasts included a tribute from Deirdre’s father and a toast from Eric’s mother.
As the stars came out, the party moved into the barn. DJ Chris Poynter set the tone with a light show and dance floor tracks for the guests who were also treated to some late-night snacks.

Stand-Out Moments At Bird's Eye Cove
- Portraits with cows in the fields — pure magic.
- Chickens rushing out of the barn and surrounding the couple.
- Plenty of time to explore the property together for portraits making them relaxed and natural.
- Dinner in the field — unique, beautiful, and unforgettable.
- A hot summer day where the rain stayed away, gifting us a glowing sunset for speeches.
- Deirdre’s stunning A La Robe dress and Eric’s timeless tux from Outlooks.

My Approach
I arrived a day early to scout the farm with Deirdre and Eric and stuck around for their wedding rehearsal, making sure I knew the best spots for light and portraits. On the day itself, I leaned into a mix of digital and film photography, including black and white for a timeless, editorial feel. Birds Eye Cove Farm lends itself perfectly to a documentary style: candid moments, wide landscapes, and small unscripted details. I really wanted to capture their day in a way that felt effortless, natural, and true to them.
